Peter Gelling will cover Indonesia for GlobalPost, examining the country’s difficult transition to democracy after 30 years of authoritarian rule, its emerging economy, environmental challenges, and its role as a voice of moderation throughout the Muslim world. Gelling freelanced for a variety of newspapers and magazines in New York City before moving to Jakarta in 2005 where he has covered the world’s most populous Muslim nation, along with East Timor, for the International Herald Tribune and the New York Times. His coverage of Indonesia has spanned everything from the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami that killed 170,000 people, to the country’s fight against al-Qaeda-linked terrorist networks. Gelling graduated from Indiana University with a degree in history and is pursuing a graduate degree in the history of Islamic civilization and politics, as well as Arabic, at the Islamic State University in Jakarta.
