Alex Leff will cover Costa Rica for GlobalPost, delving into the social and environmental problems that threaten this small nation's peaceful and eco-friendly balance. Mr. Leff is the online editor at the Tico Times, Central America's leading English language newspaper, covering daily news on Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama for its website www.ticotimes.net as well as contributing to the weekly print edition since December 2007. Prior to relocating to Costa Rica, Mr. Leff lived for seven years in Barcelona, Spain, where he completed Columbia University's master's in journalism in 2004, at the school's overseas multimedia program. He trained across different media platforms – mostly in Spanish – in the wake of such events as Spain's pivotal 2004 general election and the March 11 Madrid train bombings that helped decide it. He has worked as an assistant to CNN in its coverage of the Madrid bombings trial, and provided research for Spain's La Vanguardia newspaper. Mr. Leff also contributed key reporting to the New York Post story that uncovered a fake 9/11 survivor, who rose to prominence based on false claims that survived the crumbling Twin Towers during the 9/11 attacks. A Brooklyn, NY native, Mr. Leff obtained a bachelor's degree in social science at Sarah Lawrence College in New York.
